How can I fix my Vailant Eco tec plus 438?

I've recently moved in and inherited the above boiler which worked really well up until this morning. I am getting a symbol and a code F 28 which I've learned from the internet means the pilot light will not ignite, although I can't find instructions on how to resolve.
Is there anything I can try prior to calling in a professional ?
I'd be really grateful for advice.

Ignition fault
The boiler book will list all the possible causes of an ignition fault but you would require appropriate equipment in order to test components

On nearly all boilers the pilot flame will only light if the fan is running and has been recognised by the air pressure switch inside the enclosure - there is not much you can reasonably do if you want a quick fix.

I get the impression that if you call British Gas they will want to sell you a new boiler and flush your radiators too - they tend to up-sell.
