John Lewis jlwm 1402 fills, drains, but does not spin ?

JLWM1402 washing machine fills, and drains, but does not spin. No error code shown. Can hand turn drum easily. No unusual noises evident.

Cycle stops with flashing lights on. To empty drum selected 'Drain' and this worked okay. Removed wet clothes.

Cleaned drain filter trap. Is this a replacement activity of carbon brushes to the motor? How do I access this?

There are several videos on youTube showing how to access washing machine carbon brushes - but the general case is that you usually get failure symptoms of rough running - burning smells and unusual noise. Usually brushes do not suddenly fail without any warning.

There are other things that might cause the motor not to run - the motor's windings might have failed - the motor's run drive capacitor - the drive transistor a Triac might also be a very probable cause.

If you have the confidence inspect the brushes to reassure yourself and then change the triac on spec - inexpensive.

Consider also the relative age of the thing versus the possible cost of a commercial repair and a new machine.

Good Luck..., May 2016
