Water heater light out?

I was trying to regulate the temperature of my water heater because the water was too hot but have ended up putting the pilot light out. How do I get it back on

Irene - modern gas appliances do not have a permanent pilot flame - it only comes on when there's a call for heat.

It will come on when it's time to heat water - on its own.

You do not mention the Make or model of your heater.
