Its either the remote or the fire.
We assume the remote batteries are OK and properly seated. They are, aren't they? And that the fire actually has power. It has, hasn't it?
One way you can check the remote is to use a mobile phone camera (or a normal digital camera if you have one) to "look" at the business end of the remote. Look at the phone or camera screen. You should be able to see the infra red LED light up when you press a button.
