BT Freelance XD 1500 doesn't work when I put new batteries in. Why?

My BT Freelance XD 1500 handsets need new batteries. I have bought some 650mAh rechargable batteries, installed them the right way round and left on the handset to charge for 24 hours. The phone is totally dead. Why? What can I do?

Try non re-chargeable batteries, but DO NOT PLACE PHONE IN CRADLE, then you will know if the phone is any good
