indesit w123, 8 flashes then pauses, knob keeps turningwithout stopping?

machine starts to fill then stops, selector knob keeps turning and clicking without stopping. tried resetting it as in previous tips but still no go. switching it off, etc, putting dial on the stop/reset position, etc. tried all sorts of programs. advice please.
