AC1+ Model 2700 - Automatically Switches Off?

Taken out of winter storage, new batteries fitted, switched to ON, valve opened and several seconds later it switched OFF, several more seconds later it switched back ON and then switched OFF permanently and would not switch ON again unless battery removed and replaced. Then ON / OFF sequence again!
Any ideas please.
