There are likely enthusiast forums that may be able to help.
There is probably some way the machines controller knows where the carriage is. If that's not getting correct info ("seeing" where the carriage is or that it is at some datum), then the poor thing will get all confused.
Like I said the beginning, without knowing what you are talking about, we're pretty much shooting in the dark
