Test for car battery charger?

Maypole 8Amp charger how to test to ensure it's working.
Haven't done it yet but told to connect multimeter leads to the charger leads then turn on charger, the multi meter will give a reading. But could not remember what the charge rate was. Is this the correct way to test?
Many thanks.

Connect the charger to a battery (not a completely dead onè!)

Set the meter to read Volts,

Select the 20 volt range if range select is manual

Check the voltage across the battery

You should see about 12 volts

Turn on the charger

You should see something like 14.4 volts or so
