Frister + Rossmann 45 repairs?

Hi. I have inherited this machine from my Mother. Unfortunately, although the machine's motor functions, I cannot get the needle assembly to operate. Is there maybe a sort of clutch assembly that needs to engage for this to happen?

On the right hand side where the balance wheel is there is a smaller wheel called a stop motion, turn the wheel so it is fairly tight clockwise and this should engage the topshaft to move the needle
