vauxhall vectra 1.8 1995 overheating?

engine overheats . have tried removing the thermostat and the engine still overheats. fan belt is intact and the heater blows cold air.
as it heats up the top hose of the radiator is warmer than the bottom,
within a few minutes the engine reaches 100 on the temp gauge and after idiling the engine when the car is stationary the engine temp drops to less than 50 within 4 minutes.
any ideas?

the water pump was the problem
the engine was started up when frozen and the blade on the water pump shaft spun off the end cos it's just a press fit on the shaft
I took it out and welded a couple of places on the blade to the shaft and now it's going great.
hope this helps others cos it's a common problem I'm told
