How can I mend vtech challenger laptop?

My granddaughters vtech challenger laptop mouse will only move the curser sideways. The ball is freemoving. Can you give any advice?

Make sure both encoder shafts are clean and rotate freely. You might be able to find general tips on ball mouse cleaning on YouTube etc.
