How can I fix my Bush tape player?

I bought a second hand bush radio/tape player (i can't recall the exact model at the moment, it's a 'dream......' and basically is a small, 50's style cream radio, with a tape player on the front) When I press play, ff or rwnd the spindle that turns the tape looks as if it wants to go round but kinda just judders and then stops, and the button pops back up again. Is there anyway i can mend this myself or will i have to take it to a professional?
I'd really appreciate any help I could get.
Many thanks

Replace worn belts. Invest in a better stereo (if bush could even get past mono) like cambridge audio or at least a phillips.
