How to fix Toshiba DVD Player SD-3980 that gives "incorrect disk"?

After only a few months of no problems, my new Toshiba DVD Player SD-3960 suddenly stopped working. When a disk is put in slot, the player loads it, then says "incorrect disk" on the TV screen. The digital display on the player says "bad". I've tried cleaning the disks and blowing any dust out of the DVD player and nothing helps. No help in the owner's manual or on the Toshiba website. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks.

I have the SD 3980 SU2 and had the problem where the disc wouldn't play. I now have the problem that the player won't turn on so I can't open the disc tray. I contacted Toshiba and told them of both problems. They say they can't do anything because it has to be a specific problem. I assume there has to be a "bad disc" message, but I don't remember what the message was when the disc wouldn't play and now that the player won't turn on I can't see the message again. I feel it should be enough that I have that model number and that the disc wouldn't play. I feel they should replace it without me remembering the exact message on the display. No more Toshiba for me. If anybody is looking to replace that model, you will need to know the exact message on the display.

To ensure the satisfaction of our customers and to maintain the integrity and quality of our products, Toshiba America Consumer Products, L.L.C. is issuing an important product update. This is not a safety issue.

Toshiba is committed to customer service and to continuously improving the quality of its products. It has come to our attention that certain DVD players bearing the model numbers SD-3980 and SD-K750 may at some point in their life stop playing discs due to a component part failure. In such case, the error message "bad" will be shown on the unit's display. Affected units will have "SU2" at the end of the model name (e.g., SD-3980-SU2), which can be found on the back of the unit.

If you own either of these models and experience the issue described above, please contact Toshiba Customer Solutions at 1-800-631-3811 for information on how to obtain a replacement unit.

I had the same problem. Deep in the Toshiba website you can find a notice that some SD-3980 and some SD-K750 dvd players have a bad part and you will get those error messages when it fails. They say to call customer service about getting a replacement unit. 1-800-631-3811.

I have no answer, but have the exact problem. Any disc diplays "bad" on the digital display and "incorrect disc" on the TV screen. Cleaning has not helped. Have you had any other answer?
