I have sound but no picture; just a horizontal line across the screen?

What do I need to do buy a new T.V. or buy a part for it?

you have lost vertcial deflection. maybe need to resolder the vertical IC or replace it or its feed resistor. unless you have experience, take it to a tech. This fault is usually fixable, ignore the other poster!

Gut feeling says a new tv would be cheaper than the bits and the time to repair it. Does the technical "thump on the case" make any difference? If it does, it may be a dry joint on the screen height potentioneter inside, if it has one. A lot of newer tv's don't have analogue adjustment any more, it's all digital "throw away" stuff. The problem if it has one is: A. how to find it, B. where to get the right bit from & C. will it stay working when you've done it? Ebay anyone?
