why does the machine take the conditioner straight away,rather than when the cycle requires it?

Your dispenser will likely be gunged up. If you take out your dispenser drawer and look at the roof of the dispenser I bet it's all black?

This means that when machine is filling water is being squirted into the wrong compartment syphoning away the conditioner. Try giving it a good clean with a nail brush.
