If you haven't already done so, a firmware update may help. You can find it here:

Ensure you save/print the update instructions.
But, I'm having the same trouble. Player works fine on one of my pcs (Win XP Pro) but isn't recognized on my laptop (Win XP Home). The laptop plays a sound when it the player is connected, but I cannot locate the device.
