ford 6006e flashing display?

I've just bought a 2004 Ford Focus which has a type 6006E radio/CD. The radio and CD work fine but the display flashes on and off all the time which I asssume is not right. It's not prompting me to enter the 4 digit radio code and I've read the manual but I, and the garage, can't see why the display should be flashing. Any suggestions as its very irritating!

A simple fix. Disconnect positive lead from car battery, wait 3 minutes for electrical current to exit vehicle's electronics system, reconnect positive lead to battery, then turn on ignition switch. The display will be blank, but after powering up radio, display will show "12:00," but will not be flashing. Simply set clock and the problem is solved. It's best to start car and let idle for 3 minutes to allow electronics system to fully set to factory settings. This solution also clears car's onboard computer of any glitches that may cause other issues with vehicle.

Providing you have the code (very important!) I removed the fuse. This reset the unit rather than disconnect the battery. Once I popped the code back in, it worked fine - both the volume and the flashing display.
