Make sure the top metal cover of the player is not buckled. Does the tray open and close with the top cover removed?
On mine, I also discovered that the little belt which drives the drawer mechanism was stretched. I replaced it with a short, thin elastic band=success!
This is an ANCIENT CD player, but the sound quality is A1, so I'm keeping it.
