When I put the cassette into my player, it pops right out again, so I can't even use a tape cleaner to see if cleaning it would help the situation.

I would look inside to see if there is old tape tangled around the gears or wheels that the tape runs thru. If you don't see anything,take a flat screw driver and push the lever that makes it think a tape is in it then push eject & try it with a real tape after that. Hope this helps you
