How can I boot xp onto an old Laptop?

trying to load windows xp onto a laptop that originally had windows ME on it. Keeps stopping and saying unable to copy certain files then I try it again and it will copy those files but not others and so on and so on and so on. Can someone help?

It may be that the laptop does not have enough resources for XP (you don't say what it is): e.g. Fast enough processor, Big enough disk, eaough real memory (512MB with SP2).
