Does anybody know how to change the front pads on a mk4 golf? I used to do a lot of my own car repairs, but have since had a run of newer cars and I am a little rusty.

Are there any special tools I would need or will sockets and spanners do?

normally sockets and spanners will do unsure on golf but you might find it could be a star shape instead of socket your have to rip tyre off and check behind if so can get from halfords other than that quite easy to do if unsure get haynes manual cant go wrong then hope thats bit of help for you
