do i need an earth to lights?

im renovating an oldish house and modernising some wiring my bathroom ceiling rose has no earth only live(red)neutral(black) all fittings are plastic do i need an earth

If you are replacing an accessory (switch, socket, ceiling rose etc) then it's not rewiring. You don't need an earth at the light you describe if all fittings are indeed plastic. If you were installing a new lighting circuit then you would need an earth due to current regulations, which are not retrospective.

If you are rewiring, your work will need to be checked by a 'Competent Person' or you will be breaking the law. Second current regs require an earth.
