Philips TV won't turn on, makes high-pitched clicking noise?

Hello,

My Philips/Magnavox 27" TV, around 7 years old, suddenly stopped working. My wife was watching it around 5.00 pm, and around 7.00 pm we noticed it was making a soft, high-pitched, repeating noise, not quite like clicking but that's the best word I can think of to describe it. At first I thought it was a DVD stuck on a track, because it kind of sounds like the sound the laser head makes when it moves around a little -- this high-pitched squeak/click. It makes the sound in short increments, probably 4 or 5 "clicks" per second.

The sound only stops when we unplug the TV from wall outlet.

I tried unplugging the audio/video cables from the DVD player, and the coax from the rabbit ears, but those don't seem to make a difference.

I notice the sound the loudest from the back of the TV, as best as I can tell, right underneath the back of the CRT (I'm not too familiar with the terminology; the "apex" of the cone-like shape that makes the TV display images, that is, the part in the back).

This is more than likely unrelated, but in between the TV working and noticing that it wasn't, my 1-year-old son threw the TV remote. He was in a different room when it happened, though, and I just can't see how that would make the TV itself stop working. Thought I'd mention it, though. And I did try fiddling with the remote, pressing the "TV" button, etc, but with no luck.

I would love for this to be an excuse to ditch the CRT TV and pick up a flat screen of some sort. But if it's a cheap fix, then I should do that...

Thanks in advance.

My 47 philips flat tv won't turn on, but the lights inside the tv still glow when I plug it in. Can I fix it myself?

Thank you, Lee. We ended up taking it to a repair shop, and apparently it was just a blown fuse. It ended up being fairly inexpensive to fix, to, unfortunately, no HDTV for me. Yet.

The noise you can hear is probably coming from the power supply section of the set. Televisions have, for years, had 'switch mode' power supplies, which means that, in the event of a fault occurring the power supply section will shut down, rather than years ago when it would just go on supplying power, often leading to things smouldering and producing smoke. This is why modern TVs seldom produce smoke signals when faulty.

The design age of a TV is 7 years, (at least it was when I was in the trade). That means yours is probably at the point where it is uneconomic to repair. In any event, the forthcoming change to digital TV is also a factor.

If you can get it to a TV repair shop where they will give you a free estimate it is probably worth doing, as it might be something simple, such as dry joints on the line output transformer, (Philips sets used to suffer from that a lot).

Anything more than an hour's labour and it probably aint worth the bother.

Hope that helps you.

Lee

ps. It's nothing to do with the remote, unless, of course, in throwing it, there was a sunstantial impact with the TV itself!
