Ariston Margherita 2000 - dial keeps turning ??

I've just spent £85.00 on this washing machine to have the bearings replaced.
It is about 2 and a half years old, ARISTON MARGHERITA - 2000 (AWD125 Advantage) and now the main dial keeps spinning after you start a program.
The water will eventually drain after a great deal of messing around, but the clothes remain unwashed.
Aside from anyone helping me pick this lump of metal up and throw it out of my kitchen window, anybody got any ideas of how this can be fixed !! :-)
Chris, January 2005
I've fixed the dial turning problem! Switching off and turning it to reset didn't work, it still clicked round as though it was haunted. But thanks to previous posts here - I took off the bottom panel, unscrewed the filter and cleaned it (quite a lot of smelly black water came out, so put a towel on the floor). I'm now better off by 2p, 1p and a key - and the hundreds a new machine would have cost. Very, very smug!

I had the dial turning escapade!
Thanks for the front "filter" tip.
I never knew the front kick plate came off.
Initially I thought it was clear but delving deeper I found 2 gravel stones stopping the water pump working.
I bought mine off my sister who bought it in 2004, it's now 2016. Still much more life in the old girl yet.
Whew!

Thanks for all of the tips guys, dog pooh bag in the filter :-) 5 min job to remove…peace now prevails

I did open the filter chamber, there is nothing in it, and i saw an unpluged dual coupled earth wire at bottom? would this be plugged and where? can any one have the answer..

Thanks for all the good advice everyone.

I had the same problem, dial kept spinning and machine would not empty.

Tipped machine back, opened filter (make sure you've got some towels and a bucket / washing up bowl handy, because the water is going to come out from the filter opening!!)

I took out a 5p coin and a piece of torn fabric.

Machine works a dream now!

I've been really happy with my Ariston. I've had it over 10 years and this was my first problem.

Steve, December 2013
dial keep clicking around and around
i feel it may be because i have tried to use dryer on its own.
i think this may have happened before, but not sure how i recified it

CHRISTINA, December 2012
Thanks for this - I'd been convinced it was a problem with the timer control, and was about to start dismantling it!
In teh end, 3 5p pieces, and a couple of screws came out of the filter - and nothing else - and it sloved the problem :)

Noel, July 2012
I've had mine 12 years and never had a problem however now every time I begin a cycle it's fine for 5 mins then... Click.., click... Click!!! No blockage in the filter behind the kick plate so I'm out of ideas!!! Not a happy bunny!!!

I've had this washer for over 10 years and this was the first problem I've ever had with it. Clearing the filter seems to have fixed it. Something resembling plastic antlers appears to have caused the problem - no idea where that came from, but pleased that it wasn't something more serious!

Glenn, October 2011
Ours is 9 years old and we've just had the same problem the day before a holiday!
Emptying the trap at the front sorted it (70pence and 10 cents).
In-laws one lasted 2 years before it wore out - bearings, motor etc.
Swings and roundabouts. You pay peanuts etc
Pick your cliche!!

Another Chris, September 2011
cheers guys, i had a hair band stuck in the motor and also found 10p and a collar straightener from a shirt.

for those of you struggling to find the filter its behind the bottom panel. I struggled to find it as mine wudn't open so I had to lever it open with a knife.

make sure a can pore out as much water as possible before opening the filter cover.

On my Machine there is a round draining plug ,bottom right at the front. If you unscrew this you should see the blades of the Pump at the back. Normally this gets blocked with hairclips , string. Check this. Once clear it should stop dial from turning and start Washing again.

We have had ours for 8 years and never had a problem before so can't complain too much i suppose but now the dial is spinning and the filter is clear and it wont reset. me hubby and two kids and my washing is piling up and up and up!! man came iout to it on saturday and said he would order the part rang him today to say er hello my washer isnt fixed yet and he said he couldnt get a part for it and it needed a new circuit board.

We have an Ariston Margherita 2000 AWD12 Advantage that's been alright for the past seven years catering for us and two bubbas, apart from the poor plastic door handle that gets brittle and falls apart after a while - have replaced two so far - sourced from espares. Programme dial started clicking round last night when it was draining. Took front kickplate off, tipped it back, put a big bowl under the front and unscrewed the drain filter cap to drain manually. Found a hair band, three coins, a nail and a pin. The filter cap arms to the disc that throttles flow to the drain pump impeller had broken so will replace that at a cost of about £20 for the part: http://www.espares.co.uk/part/washing-machines/filters/ariston/p/1560/491/0/0/482894/washing-machine-pump-filt.html . Machine now runs fine again. Happy laundering.

Stu is correct. My dial kept turning - looked on this website and one of the solutions was from Stu who says that the filter/pump may be blocked. Pressed the off button and switched off at the socket. Opened front cover cover plate at the bottom to gain access and unscrewed filter slightly to drain water into tray. When drain, removed cover - piece of broken plastic dropped out (the removable collar stiffener from a cotton shirt - being wondering what happened to the left collar stiffener). Turned machine back on with dial turned to one of the stop positions. When light flashed to say program had finished (after about 1 minute) pressed the off button moved dial to the rinse program (as this is where I think the machine was when the blockage sent the dial turning) and pressed the on button. Machine now seems fine. It's likely that after I removed the blockage I could have just switched the machine back on and it would have known where in the program it was and would have continued without me turning the dial to the stop position etc. In any case, many thanks Stu.

Mine is doing the same and no matter how many times i reset it it still clicks round and round and round (ad infinitum) The 'filter' at bottom right behind the cover has a cap that screws off anticlockwise. when looking inside, there is no blockage just a small motor which spins round. on turning on (with cap off) the thing started gushing water out, so i hastely replaced the cap, made a cup of coffee, had a smoke and started looking on line for a new machine!!

Ian (Durham), July 2010
these machines are crap, expensive crap at that. I have had mine 'repaired'under warrenty and guess what, warrenty has run out and machine has crapped itself again...cleaning filters...nah, not blocked...kicking it...makes you feel better but doesnt fix...resetting the dial works for 5 min...crap crap crap buyer beware!!!

judyrae, July 2010
I LOVE MINE.... 12 years iv had it, 6 washes a day with never a single problem.

paula, July 2010
"dial keeps turning" doesn't meant that you need a new circuit board. I took mine to a electronic technician and he thoroughly washed the board with soap and water with a brush and dried it with a hair drier and returned me saing "It certainly would work". It worked very surprisingly I did not find any "dial keeps turning" problem for a year. The reason may be due to earthing of the circuit board by cockroach shit or damp on the board.

Dr. Mehedi, June 2010
Check the motor brushes. Replace them if they're worn. Good luck! (I had the same problem on a ALD125 (w/dryer)

Nigel Tegg, March 2010
the reson your dial is spinning is your filter is jammed
re move fitter cover bottom right turn anti clock wise
clear the blockage
and problem solved
do not keep trying to operate till the fillter is cleared you will only cause damage
i have just sorted mine which is 7 year old
blocked fillter is only fault i get
bet you find lose change

stu, February 2010
Just to add some stuff.
I'm using mine for about 4 yrs by now. The dial starts spinning by it self since around 2yrs ago. Mom's margherita 2000 did the same as well to my surprise at the time.

What I usually do is to reset the computer by turning the on/off button to off position, then turning the dial to the stop position by selecting the big dot at the end of the cycle. Then, push the power button again to the on position, then let the machine run and wait until the lock warning light stop illuminating, which means the computer is resetted. Then start all over again.

Now, what causing it? I found that the machine could be overloaded. But I also experience the problem with medium load. If you have 4pairs of jeans in there, they are about 1kg each, and when you add water in the drum and the jeans soak some of the water, the weight can be doubled easily. Best suggestion is to watch carefully what's been put inside.

I've got that from my mom. She got it from one of the technician who came to service the machine for some other problem.

Ours is 6 yrs old, has had 2 new drums and 3 lots of bearings, 3 circuit boards and still likes to dial every 4 months or so.... tried re starting , kicking it, cleaning it only to find it still doing it so me thinks another circuit board, AGAIN!!!! 3 kids uniforms stuck in it on a saturday night.~Pile.Thank goodness for kitchen appliance insurance even if it does take 5-8 days for them to visit : (

andy, November 2009
Thanks Richard for the advise. I was about to throw the damn thing out of the kitchen window. I’ve cleaned it and found a screw driver that was preventing the machine from draining the water or even completing the cycle. Still my dog is scared shitless from the noise but at least this is the quietest out 2 machines I had

uncle Bob, October 2009
having same problem, is that big white ball the filter? i'm trying to do it at mo!

stew, October 2009
Our Ariston Margherita 2000 is three years old. When the dial keeps turning it has usually meant a new circuit board, we are onto our third. The washer has also had a new motor. Fortunately we took out an extended warranty.

Jill, March 2009
Mines the same. Bearing on its way out to.Two years old. the cheapest bearing replacement kit is £11.99 (http://www.speedyspares-appliances.com/main.asp?modelid=1125&cat_id=2&catmakeid=55&makeid=1&itemid=273)

Dont think thats to bad a price. As for the dial spinning...yes mines the same there to I usually tilt the machine backwards reach under it when its switched off and squeeze the black rubber drain hose under the drum..(feels like im milking a cow). But that usually sorts it.If not get some adjustable pliers and remove the spring clip pull off the hose and remove the white plastic filter inside in the bottom of this you'll find an alladins cave...I found £8 in pound coins in mine..no notes though the wife has those out of the pockets first !

roy, October 2005
Chris mine did the same removed large rubber pipe at bottom of drum to find a sock preventing draining, also mine is just over 2yrs and bearing going ,these machines are under engineered & a pile of p*o will be the last i buy!

mark, May 2005
Try looking for stuck coins ect in the removeable filter- its behind the kicking plate at the front. The dial keeps turning if it cant drain the water.

richard, April 2005
hi chris, our ariston did the same within the year so the engineer fixed it with a new computer board under warranty, ours tries to demolish the utility room whilst spinning too, and recently our dryer part of the cycle packed up so i wouldnt advise anyone to get one of these cheap machines...

jonnie, February 2005
Sorry Chris, the Aristons are a complete waste of money; throw it out of your window!

It might be trying to return to a previously selected program. Turn the selector to the 'off' position, then switch on, or some of them reset by holding the button in for 3 seconds.

Paul - www.washwise.co.uk, January 2005
hi Chris had the same problem with ours try emptying the pump trap ours was filled with all sorts of cr*p including a five pound note also our bearings shaged out after two years sounds like a train coming through when it spins
