Managed to get mine going again. Just needed a bit of encouragement.......

. Moved the laser carriage backwards and forwards a few times and made sure it was centered in the starting position.
. A few gentle taps here and there.
. Opened and closed the draw.
. Fiddled about with the ribon cable

and all of a sudden....away it went.

Basically, the DVD should start to "spin up" sometime during the "loading" phase after closing the draw. It should remain spinning until either the "eject" botton is pressed on the remote control or the "screen saver" kicks in. (A silence followed by a high pitched sound coming from the DVD player indicates the DVD has correctly started spinning. A continuous motoring sound is heard if it hasn't). If the DVD doesn't start spinning before the end of the loading phase, then the "unkown disk" message appears.

So why doesn't the DVD start spinning? I don't really know. I guess it could be a loose connection on a ribon cable, faulty gears, faulty laser carriage. Perhaps it's not used often enough or just needs lubricating. After fiddling about with it, my DVD player now works most of the time. I still get the occasional "unkown disk" message but it is easy to get going again...I simply open and close the draw 3 times and away it goes.

Someone's just give me one to try fix which has the same problem. Took the cover off and looked inside but the machine doesn't look very servicable. However, when I plugged it in, switched it on and inserted a dvd while the cover was off I noticed the dvd wasn't turning. The drive motor was making a sound as if it were turning but the dvd remained stationary. The investigation continues....

I know it's a little late, but for anyone else who may have the same problem: I had the same problem. I took the bottom off and was looking at the parts inside it. What I found with mine was that the gears were not turning smoothly. I realized it was something between the gear on the motor (white) and the middle gear. All I had to do was to push the white gear that is on the motor back down until it snapped back into place. Problem solved. I hope this helps others with the same problem.

I had a matsui dvd225 that stopped working only the red led was blinking. I replaced one conding on the transformer bord lowvoltage side location c20, conding size 16V/470microF.
and now itworks.

I had a problem where it just said "unknown disk". On taking it apart, there was no sign of laser activity. Fiddled with the ribbon cable between the laser assembly and the PCB, and it sprang back into life. Figures. This is the part that receives the most mechanical movement, since it serves the laser carriage. But it's tempermental. It is a clearly visible red laser, which you can even see through a DVD, but beware not to let it shine in your eyes! Now the only problem is trying to track down a replacement. If you give up with any of your machines, please send them to me! clive@pluton.co.uk
