How can I stop the top thread snapping on my very old singer sewing machine?

I have a very old singer sewing machine 201K - the top thread keeps snapping. I do not have a handbook but remember my mother always talking about the importance of having the correct tension. I've tried the dial at every setting. Can you help?

Hello Monica,
Go through this step by step, 1st make sure that the machine is threaded correctly, make sure that the thread is in between the tension discs, when you thread the machine make sure the presser foot is up,make sure that you have the needle in the correct way round, flat side facing in towards the machine (right) do not use a thread that is too thick, number 40 or 50 thread is what you need, make sure the bobbin is in the correct way round. when you have threaded the top put the presser foot down, put your left finger behind the needle and with your right hand you should just about be able to pull the thread through the eye of the needle without strain, if you can't then the top tension is too tight, slacken it off as bit, with the bottom tension you should just about be able to pull the thread through the needle plate with very slight pressure, if it is loose you will need to tighten the very small screw on the bobbin case very slightly but make sure there is no fluff in between the bobbon case and very small spring attached.
Try this little lot first and if this does not work contact me if you wish.
