Phillips SC 201 1992 vauxhall corsa radio cassette player in safe mode?

how do i get a Phillips SC 201 1992 vauxhall corsa radio cassette player in safe mode to operate? I have tried all previous instructions but mine shows '5 - - - - ' after safe. tried the code but to no avail as it wont accept the code after the number 5. any suggestions?

Thanks , I have tried this but 5 ---- still comes up and wont accept code. Even tried pulling fuse and leavig to reset but didn't work. The 5 ---- arose as a result of pressing the AS button and can't get it to reset to 10---- to allow code entry. Any other suggestions ?

1. switch on ignition - not necessary to start car!!
2. Press AND HOLD "AS" button
3. Whilst STILL PRESSING "AS" button turn radio on
4. Wait till beep is heard
5. Should then show "----" on screen - release "AS" button and enter code as normal
