I have a 32" 32PW9616 model which also switches itself off after about 7, 10, etc minutes. I then have to leave it off for at least an hour before it works again. But again fails within few minutes (if I am lucky I get about 30 minutes. I have written to Philips and no response :-(. I paid £1250 for it and do not want to throw it out yet.

It is ridiculous that no one a Philips can find a solution (I am sure they know of the problem) or are prepared to give out a solution. Just randomly replacing a tube, relay, etc is not really appropriate because we do not know what is causing the problem

I have a Philips 28PW6006/05 wide screen tv, that struggles to come on from cold, you can hear a faint click from the relay, and the tube heaters come on for two seconds and go off, if you pump the channel button on the remote, set comes on after 5-10 pushes and works fine,- have checked set for dry joints, no joy, any have a solution ?

David, September 2009
hi robert how did you get on?

i have the same problem in that it takes 30 secs or so to change channel or alter the volume. im guessing, like others on this page, it's the painter chip. did they replace it when you wrote to them?

i live in london. does anyone else know the best way to replace it for the philips 28pw6515/05?

thanks guys.

i too have a Philips 28PW6515 but mine has a 2 minute lag between changing channels. this, im informed, is down to the faulty painter chip. the repair costs about £100 but the set is only worth £100 so im gonna chuck it in the bin and vow to never buy another philips product as long as i live. oh and i'll share my expierience with as many ppl as possible to stop them making the same mistake and buying products made by philips.

i hate philips, March 2007
Got an Philips 28PW6515, its about 3 years and now ready for the trash! It wont respond to the remote (and yes I tried severals)

Never a Philips again!

david, September 2006
I have a 28 inch Philips 28PW6515/05 and it at first started to flicker and the colours were all either red, blue or a garish yellowy green, and then zap, it turned into a purple screen with a thin white pin stripe running aross the whole screen in a zig zag motion. And this is all it did. the set was only a year old, so i called the shop I purchased it from and they said "There is a good engineer in London" and so I called him out and he turned upo and said it looks as though your tube maybe going, and the repair was £70 and he said that if it happens again not to bother calling him as it appeared that the tube was burning out a curcuit board and causing the fault. Not even a month later the same happened again.

It has been months now and I have this lovely looking Tv that doesnt work, and I feel a little begrudged having to throw away a TV that cost good money when people I know bought cr*p named TV from supermarkets and they have had no troubles with their sets.

Any ideas what i could do rather than throw out £900 of TV.

Having decided to buy a new TV with emigration in mind, I bought a Philips 28PW6526 for its features and ability to work internationally. Now living in Australia the TV has developed the auto switch off fault attributed to the painter chip. I am now trying to source a pre- programmed SSB since the Australian equivilent part does not have the IC7064 fitted and thus won't work the wireless surround sound. I too have emailed Philips but won't hold my breath for a reply.

Andrew Jarvis, December 2005
Our 28PW6515/05 went through a period of apparently not
switching on (and it didn't make that little 'click' that lets you know it's up and running) so we sent it off to be fixed. It came
back in working order but without the remote control. I regret
ever sending the remote (person on the phone said 'not needed', but person who picked up the TV said 'ooh yes we'd better have that').

The replacement remote didn't work, neither did the one we
subsequently bought - taking a brave punt on £20. We would
have made do with using the Freeview remote but my flatmate
wanted to try viewing his digital camera output and apparently
we needed to do something to the TV with the remote.

The TV is now doing its 'not switching on' trick again, but if we
just leave it a few moments it 'leaps' into action. We've got a
Freeview attached to Ext 1 so we have to press the button on
the top of the TV about five times to change the channel to
the Freeview one.

It works fine - eventually...

Having read posts to forums such as this I understand that our
Painter IC is a bit dodgy and it would seem that all of them have a bit of a design fault. I didn't know what a Painter IC was before our TV took a funny turn so I suppose it has been a learning experience.

At least our TV has forced us to reassess our hurried attitude to life and I now have time to make a cup of tea and load the washing machine before vegging in front of it. I feel I've earned it ;-)

Unless I learn how to replace Painer ICs at will, or learn that
they are no longer in use I'm unlikely to buy one of their TVs
that contain this chip.

By comparison my fairly ancient (20 years) Akashi colour TV
works fine. Then again it doesn't have a SCART socket.

After a long pause, Philips have offered to pay the parts cost - providing I get the repair done by an official agent. Minimum driving distance to either of those suggested is 30 miles (each way)
It will be interesting to discover what they will charge for the labour. Neither company has an email address that works, and I have constant engaged tones on their phones.
I have discovered a company that will exchange the board at a cost of about £80 (www.mces.co.uk/ic_fitting_service.htm) so if the labour charge turns out to be of that order, I guess I will just swap the board myself.........and avoid Philips in the future.

the following comment :-
'I have to agree with this, the Painter chip fitted by Philips is the worst goddam invention ever to be introduced to domestic equipment. It's awful to change and if a new one isn't booted right first power on then you have to change it again and it's expensive. I guess that about 95% of the faults on big Philips TVs can be put down to the Painter chip and those faults are really varied like for example "it comes on OK then after 20 minutes goes
into standby on it's own, if I turn it on again it runs for another 20
minutes", or "it takes 5 minutes to change channels when I press the remote button". They are mostly ridiculous problems that shouldn't exist on TVs today, there is no excuse for it.'
Is that enough for you? Sounds like "not fit for purpose" to me.

Here's more on the subject from "www.e-repair.co.uk"....
Philips TV (A10E Chassis)
Randomly switching to scart input when the programme output from the tuner should be displayed
This is now becoming a common problem, the cause being the painter chip IC7064 which is located on the small signals panel, there are 8 different versions but only 3 common versions

Yet another - mine is a 28pw6006/05, and has developed the "auto switch off" failure problem after 18 months, although it did it randomly a handful of times earlier on. Our local engineer says that the controls chip does not have adequate heat dissipation, and suffers all kinds of failures, (channel switching, lack of video controls, switching off...) when it overheats. Eventually the heat damages it permanently. Philips has apparently been aware of this for some time, and eventually changed the design, but has not publicly acknowledged it - otherwise I would expect to see it on the product FAQ on their website!! I have emailed their customer services, sent the engineer's report and proof of purchase, but have not yet heard anything back from them. Watch this space.

Same thing with my philips 28PW6006 keeps swithing off on its own, been told by an engineer it is a common problem with this model and will cost £150 to fix,not happy at all so have sent an email to philips saying so the tv is only 18 months old.

j.williams, May 2005
Martin,

My 28pw6006, bought in the UK, has just developed the same problem. It keeps on switching off when you start using it, then after switching it back on four or five times it continues to work normally...

Have you found a solution or heard back from Philips?

David, March 2005
this now seems to be a common problem with philips tv's now i know of 3 people with the same problem One guy works for philips here in the UK!

There are settings on the EEPROM that can get corrupted that cause strange faults. sometimes you can enter the service menue to correct the problem (code entered on handset)

Regards..

I have a Philips widescreen TV, number 28PW6006/01 which I bougth in Sweden 2.5 years ago, and now this strange problem happens (it turns it self off), I´m upset and sad, and think that this might be caused by production errors at Philips.

I´m thinking of writeing a letter to "Philips of Sweden - Headoffice" and complain.

If you reading this have the same problem do so to.
