How can I open my '95 Cherokee tailgate if handle doesn't work?

My '95 Jeep Cherokee's tailgate won't open with the handle. The lock sounds like it is locking and unlocking but the door still won't open. What can I do?

If you inside the boot you should find a grommet which can be removed to gain access to the lock mechanism
