Rev counter on a pug 406 1.9?

Does anyone know where the sensor or sender is on the engine of a pug 406 td 1.9 for the rev counter as my counter has a mind of its own it mostly reads at 2000 revs and when you rev the engine it goes the wrong way back to zero revs but sometime comes back to normal operation.

could be sensed off an injector -check for wires going to just 1 injector.may even be alternator sensed.

The sensor is on the back of the engine just above the rear engine web that bolts to the gearbox. It should be 0.1mm away from the flywheel.
