I had an Acer TravelMate 4270 with a noisy fan. Here's how I fixed it.
1. Unplug the laptop and remove the battery
2. Open up the laptop at the back. Disconnect the fan and unscrew the cooling unit.
3. Unscrew and remove the fan from the cooling unit.
4. Thouroughly clean the cooling vents of the cooling unit making sure its free of any dust.
5. Replace the laptop fan with a new one if necessary. The bearing of my fan was worn so I changed it. I found a replacement online.
6.Remove the old thermal paste on the cooler CPU and CPU.
7. Apply a thin layer of new thermal paste to the cooling unit, and screw it down.
8. Take it off again and remove the excess thermal paste from the cooling unit. You should be left with a thin layer of thermal paste on the CPU and GPU.
9. Screw the unit back into place, and attach the CPU fan.
10. Close the laptop back up.

This worked for me, and I think this is the proper way of fixing this problem.

I have just cleaned the dust from the fan housing in my Travelmate. Instant fix for the continuous fan noise! I didn't have to remove the heatsink at all, just the fan housing.

I have an Acer 5535 just two weeks out of warranty. The cooling fan just started making noise and I'm afraid it's going to crash. The fan is an Adda AB6905HX-E03 CWCP2.... Acer is useless. They want $200 just to put the unit on their bench. Then there's shipping of $60.00 cdn. I might as well purchase a new one for a few extra hundred buck. Beware when purchasing a laptop with one year warranty... they don't tell you it's disposable! LOL

clicking on e-manager boot option might solve the problem

If the fan is always on,its probably overheating, basically the fan is covered in fluff and dust and needs phisically cleaning, Remove laptop cover, use a cleaning spray on the plastic fan, you should see a difference straight away,to prevent this always use your laptop on a hard surface, not a bed, and it helps the cooling if the air flow under the laptop is not restricted, make sure the fan exaust is free from fluff also.

i have a acer 7720g abd the fan is also always on even if the laptop is idle. i play world of warcraft and it recently turned off due to overheating and the gpu and two proccesors reached 90-100C.

to mathityah:

I have Acer TraveMate 4602WLMI for about 3 years.

Recently I've paid attention on my fan's work... it was as you describe above continuous and noisy... + the laptop was very hot...

One thing I can say for sure: clean the dust from your fan exhaust... There was a huge amount of it, and somehow it doesn't surprise me, cause my Lap has been working hard for all those three years. : )

As for me that was my issue.

Sincerely.

Hi - I have a similar problem. Have had an ACER aspire 5720z for 4 weeks now. This week I have noticed a clicking sound from under the keyboard. It seems to be random and though it is not really really bad, it can get quite annoying as I know it is there. Do you think I should uninstall the programs I have added since I bought it? Many thanks.

I had the same problem since my Acer Travelmate was new.
Sitting on a train, and everyone else's Sonys and HPs were working away silently got to be puzzling and embarrasing. One day a guy was on with a quiet Acer and I asked him how he did it.
Basically he had gone in and cancelled all the start up programs which had been added since the op system had been loaded.
You can use Windows Defender Software explorer to do this - but also remember to disable that too as it starts up automaticly and scans when it feels like it.
He had also disabled his antivirus software, which was the biggest user of processor power - not really recomended but he doesn't use the internet on the train or open new emails and re-enables it when he gets home.
I tried turning everything off except A.V., made sure autodim was on, and changed the power settings to portable laptop. It's a lot better but still on more than I would like.
If you want to test why it starts misbehaving 2 weeks after installing OS, do a ctrl+alt+del immediately after installation, note what processes and programs are running, then do it again a couple of weeks later, you will be surprised how much stuff uses the processor at start up, by the time it's finished everything you are using the computer for what you wanted to do in the first place and the processor hasn't had a chance to cool down or recover.

I have just bought an acer aspire 5520 yesterday and the noise is so loud; and continous. It sounds like the hard drive hammers is also making noise. It dreadful.

Hey, I just changed my power scheme from "always on" to "portable/laptop" in control panel>power options. Made a noticable difference, with the fan on/off according to the use, but not permanent anymore...

mathityah, May 2007
Same for me: I have an acer aspire 1350, amd athlon, Windows xp, 3years old: fan almost always on. Strangely, it may stop for a 2 weeks or so, then start again without any reason... The fan started to work a lot since roughly 1 year. I reinstalled windows: it helped for 2 weeks then back to the usual.

mathityah, May 2007
I have had an Acer Ferrari 300 for two ½ years now with the same problem. It gets better when I reinstall Windows... for about two weeks, then I'm back on zero again.

My conclusion is simply that the AMD processor emits a LOT of heat and the cooling fan just isn't good enough to handle it, so the processor never actually cools down.

Anders Larsosn, May 2007
If it is new take it back.
