how do you remove the DIAL, TIMER KNOB from the amana washer to access the timer switch?

Go to http://www.appliancepartspros.com. Give it your model and see figure 5--control panel, etc

Push timer knob in off, turn knob counter to remove
Remove the next round guide, careful it might crack if there too long

Remove the rear panel to get to two screws holding timer
Move timer out to remove harness
Remove harness and GOOD LUCK
