How do I fix my back door?

I locked my upvc back door. When checking it was locked I pushed the handle down too hard and it clunked. Now the lock is working, but the handle is stuck upwards in the wrong position and it will not allow me to open the door. The handle will move around but very stiffly, almost as if it has rounded off the internal parts and it clunks all the way. What can I do? Should I remove the hinges to open the door or call a professional?

On the door interior there should be a couple of small plates on either side of the handle. These pop off with a small screwdriver.
Underneath there should be 2 screws visible.
These screws wiill remove the handle.
