Why do I get a terribly load noise when the machine is spinning?

I have an LG washing machine that sounds like a jet landing when it spins. The noise is unbelieveable but its OK on all the other cycles.

The machine is an LG model WM1171FHB

My instinct says its the bearing thats gone and the engineer told me to trash the machine and buy another.

Am I right on the bearing and if so is it something I can fix myself or do I need an engineer to do this for me?

I'm having the same problem with my FP smart load dryer. I have been told the bearings are easy to change, however good luck finding a part or instruction manual that list all the parts. I have sent a e-mail to Fisher Paykel in hope of getting info. I have been told they don't care for DIY owners Good luck!
