how do i plaster the walls?

the walls in my house are a mess. i have tried using skim over from b&q it still not great. friend says i should plaster but i don't know how.Can anyone help?

Thanks for the laugh Toffa you beat me to it.
I agree with p & m its an art and well worth what they charge considering the lumpless out come and cwt wasted plaster.
I know I've tried, getting better on patchwork [on my own home] but still got the MAN in to do the big stuff.
