Side wall of stairs?

Hi My husband decided to plane the side wall bit of our staircase, but someone else had lef tthe plane on thick, and it has gouged great big bits out of the wood. What is the best way to fix this? It's not the part against the wall, but the part that is on show in the hallway. Is it possible to remove this part and buy/fit a new one? Or I guess that would make the stairs collpase? Any ideas appreciated.

You could attach a thin bead of wood on top of the damage.

Thanks, it is to be painted, so will have to get some filler on it and sand it all smooth. Thanks again.

The part you mention is called the String, you cant realy replace it unless you get a new staircase(£ouch!)if it is to be painted fill it with wood filler,if it is to be left natural wood have a joiner look at it,he may be able to match it with a vaneer finish.
