Good answer Steve.

Fill the scratches :

Now
Materials for stained door.
Resin filler. Stain [to match door], cheap brush to apply stain.
Sand paper to rub down filler. White spirit and lint free cloth to clean area sanded

Painted door : Small tub paste filler [ready mixed] Sand paper. Water base undercoat /primer. and gloss top coat but enough to paint the whole door to cover the patching unless you aren't bothered. White spirit and lint free cloth to clean area sanded

sand down the scratched area to take away the fine wood fibre from the scratching of the wood when fine and with no fibres sticking up fill the scratches, sand flat then wipe over with lint free cloth wet with white spirit allow to dry then do the staining or painting. job done.
