fiesta 1.4 efi 1995 timing?

My cam belt went the other month. It damaged a couple of valves, which I have replaced and re-ground, and re-ground the other six while I was there. Cylinder head has gone back on using appropriate headset and correct re-fitting procedures. I set up the timing and replaced the belt, changed the oil, plugs, leads, filters, coolant. Started the car. It runs, okish although it's popping and coughing. It soumds like the timings out. Iv'e checked and re-checked it but it's still doing the same thing. The ht leads are in the correct order and all the usual stuff is set up right. It all sounds very eratic too. i.e. rev's quite high when first started. Any ideas? did you tighten the head bolts up to what they are ment to be if not this can course pressure to leak, also did you use your old bolt because sometime these will stretch on first start up!
