Extract a tape mangled in the play heads?

Put a tape into the tape deck on my hi-fi & it decided to eat the tape. The drawer where the tape sits won't open now & I don't know how to get the tape out.

You need access the rear of the mechanism. Turn the capstan flywheel by hand (large wheel with belt) while extracting the loosened tape. Usually the tape will then release quite easily.

Tape looping is usually caused by a worn pinch roller, which may require replacing or tape jamming will reoccur.

Try releasing the drawer mechanism by taking the item to bits...often the drawer is held in by a spring loaded catch or similar. Also when the unit is open you may be able to free the tape enough to be able to the extract the whole cassette when the door is unjammed. If in any doubt, try a good local repair centre, but it will be much more cost effective if you can carefully take the unit to bits yourself, and the latest micro style ones aren't too bad; just don't strip out the threads by over-tightening as they use self tapping screws!
