how do i tighten the gearbox linkage on my escort 55 van.96 1.8 diesel?

how do i tighten the gearbox linkage on my ford escort 55 van. its a 96 1.8 straight diesel. by gear box linkage i mean from the gear stick to the box, its so loose that when its in gear it wobbles about and when changing from 2nd to 3rd it'll slip from 3rd to 5th. any help with this problem would be much appreciated.

what is with the dic ks answering this guys genuine question? so what if its an older van, I own a 98 escort 55, parked next to my 08 manaro and fireblade. Keep your juvenile judgements to yourselves or pee off back to facebook where you beong with your 12 year old friends.

The problem is cured by a £45 part from a dealer (dont buy used or off ebay as it may be as loose as the one you are replacing) just tell them you need a gear linkage for and escort 55 1.8d. spend £12 on a haynes manual (that you CAN get from ebay) and you will see it is a very simple 1 hour DIY job with a decent socket set and phillips screwdriver to have your gear lever nice and tight again.

Take the van to your local mechanic and let him look at it your may need a new whole gear linkage or gearbox mate

You cun ts , replace the linkage about thirty quid, and the bush at bottom of stick, about 4 quid

But if you cant do it yourself then its prob not worth doing, garage will charge more that the van which is probably a rotter is worth

it could be the bearings that need replacing, u jus need some new linkage its easy to find and fit, that will tighten up the gear shift so it will go to the gear u wanted it to and stay there
