Yep - check the paper tray. I have the 595 and it was just mis-aligned. Makes you wonder why they'd call it a cassette rather than tray or paper. I assumed cassette has something to do with the toner since the machine opens up like an old school tape cassette door and you place the toner inside almost like a cassette tape.

If I remember correctly, the cassette on a 585 slides into the front of the machine. . . it's where you put the paper. If the machine says to check the cassette even when it's all the way in, you've probable broken the cassette detection tab. take the cassette out and look in the machine against the rear frame. You should see a small slot near one side. There should be a tab on the back of the cassette that fits into the slot. If it's gone, fold up a piece of paper and place it in the slot. Your machine will then always think the cassette is in.
