The radio works from the steering wheel paddle but the display doesn't light up nor do the buttons on the head work (except for the power button).

ok, it looks like i solved my own problem too - i found another lead lurking around th back of the dash - fitted that and all works fine! (doh!!)

Ross, on the off chance you check this can i ask you a question:

I have just re-fitted the radio back to my megane, and i can see the time and temp but cant see a radio display. When i press the power button on the radio the ariel goes up which suggests the radio is working, but i cant see anything to enter the code... would there be 2 lights on this display unit? or do i need to do something else before i enter the code?

I'll answer my own question.....
Under each dash speaker in the front is a screw holding the dash. Remove these 2 and then the dash lifts off (use a flat head screwdriver to pop th dash up). Unscrew the display and there is a yellow screw-in wth a bulb attached to the rear. The bulb is available in Maplins (UK). I replaced th bulb and could now see what was happening. I then re-enaled the main buttons on the head (seeing the display helped)!!!!
