How can I fix my G.E. washing machine transmission?

Can I change the transmission seal

To replace the transmission is quite involved and should not be attempted by most people. I am currently replacing mine and I started a week ago. If you want to attempt it call GE first to see if your machine is still under warrantee. The coverage on a transmission may be as long as 8 years. They are good about sending out a new transmission, shiping is free. To install it you will have to remove pratically every mechanical part from the machine. The most difficult thing for me was the bolt on the transmission shaft under the agitator. I had to split the nut with a chisel and then find a replacement nut because I could not remove it with a wrench. You know how you do a job and say "boy if I had to do that again I could do it in a hour?" Well if I had to do this again it would take 5-6 hours and that's really moving along. Moral to this story is, don't buy a GE washer they are notorious for bad transmission, just google it and check out the feedback. Secondly, express your displeasure to GE, they need to know. Good luck!
