Ariston Margherita A1535 Advantage Washing Machine

I bought the machine second hand but it looked in very good condition, about six weeks ago. First problem encountered was that it refused to spin on any of the chosen programmes. However, selecting the spin symbol for cottons, after washing on any programme, worked. After a month, even this failed and the machine also refused to drain. I suspected a blockage so I disconnected the machine from the waste pipe and cleaned thoroughly, although there was a lot of sludge around the insides of the pipes, there didn't seem to be a full blockage. After reconnection, the machine still failed to drain.
