How should I clean my Kenmore 158 1450180?

I need to clean and oil my Kenmore 158 1450180? It is does not shift from stitch to stitch at times. It continues to stitch the last dialed stitch instead of the newly dialed stitch. Any suggestions?? Thanks!!

Hello Rachel,
Nearly all machines with built in stitches operate on a cam and finger system, when you select a particular stitch a finger inside the machine slots onto that cam, sometimes the finger can get stuck due to lack of oil, if you can get into the top of the machine you will see the cams and finger, get some very thing oil, the thinner the better and oil it well but don't soak it, move the pattern selecter through the patterns just to work the oil in, WD40 is a favourite, sometimes over the years old oil on the machine congeals and that can cause problems.
