What could be the problem my washing machine wont spin?

I have an older Westinghouse laundromat 555 washing machine,
model No# LE555S*03 serial No# 45101177. I found this machine and everything seems to fine. There are hardly any scratches, stainless steel tube is clean etc. It appears to have been looked after! The problem is, it wont spin ? It pumps the water out but dosen't go on to spin cycle? Is it worth fixing?
Any advice appreciated.

I have just repaired my Zanussi which wouldn't spin. I have never tried to fix one before but took the advice of this site and freinds at work and managed to change the CARBON BRUSHES in the motor. These wear down throughout the life of the machine and when fully worn the motor dosen't turn. The brushes were only held in by a couple of screws and were accesible from the bottom of my machine. They can be bought from a good local spares retailer or if an odd make from the internet, where I got mine. Saved myself £400 quid for a £25 set of brushes.

If that's the only problem, I would have it repaired. We kept a (unknown make) washing machine going for over 10 years by repairing it ourselves, and we are both computer nerds ... lol. We learned about wig-wags, pumps, and belts - otherwise, we would have bought 3 new machines by now for less than the price of one. That includes 2 wig-wags and pumps, a belt and a new timer switch.

I would find a general repair manual (try the internet, library, book store) and learn how a washer works, and then see if you can use it for this machine. Also, if you live in/near a city, call around to the little repair guys, and see if someone has a bit of time to talk with you.

As with everything, think "out of box" and you can find information where you least expect it! Call your local Maytag Man - he's not busy :)

Good Luck.
