is it fixable?

i have 2 remote control cars that take batteries. the batteries were in these cars too long and now the place where the batteries go are rusty and have something green on them. i have tried wd 40 with no luck. is there anything that will clean this up so that the cars are usable. the cars go to a fisher price remote control raceway.

WD40 wont do it any good as this is an oil.
clean the contacts as best you can with an old rag / toothbrush.
then use an old cloth soaked in vinegar to wipe them over.
leave for a few hours. if necessary wipe them over again.
wipe the vinegar off before trying new batteries.
