why does my yard light?

Why does my yard light(mercury vapor) turn off in the middle of the night, then back on? After 5 minutes it turns back on. I pressume this is heat related? but don't know......

on those kind of lights, usally when it blinks on and off the bulb is going bad or the compasitor,

It might have a heat sensing device on it, that when it gets to hot it shuts down to cool. Or it might be on a timer.
