How do I eliminate a black rectangle covering the bottom half of the screen?

My Sony Trinitron Color TV has a black rectangle covering about half of the bottom of the screen-the rest of the screen shows the program-the tv is about ten years old-what can be done to fix this if possible? What can be done to eliminate the black rectangle on the screen?

My 13 year old Toshiba TV had the same problem after I hit reset on the menu, thinking I would quickly fix a contrast problem. I was able to watch VHS tapes without this problems and I could also clear the black rectangle for a few seconds after changing the channel, so I checked the menu settings again. After noticing the closed caption was not set to OFF, I set it to OFF and solved the problem. Hope this helps.
